Cell phone vs Blackberry

February 2006: After serious research, Erin goes to rogers and buys her very first cell phone. She is very happy with this phone, it is a good little phone, plays music, takes pictures, isn't a flip phone (for some reason that i can't explain, i really don't like flip phones). This phone is a Sony Ericsson W600i.
FLASH FORWARD TO PRESENT DAY
Erin's cellphone that has never given her trouble won't charge. Lindsay says to me, go to rogers and see how much of a hardware upgrade you are eligible for.
Erin - hardware upgrade what is that?
Lindsay - while, every year you can upgrade your phone, usually for free and all you need to do is extend your plan.
Erin - you don't need to wait until your plan ends? you mean i have been waiting for my plan to end to get a new phone upgrade when you get one once a year? What the!!!!
Lindsay - Yeah, while it depends on the phone and the plan extension, sometime you will have to pay extra. Go into rogers at your lunch....but take someone with you.
Erin goes to rogers on her lunch, and is overwhelmed by her options and can't make a decision...so she buys a new charger for her current phone and leaves.
But.....now she is wondering.....what is better, get a new phone now or wait until her plan ends? and the sales guy seemed to really be pushing a blackberry...with that fact that i can check my e-mail.
So help please...i would love some recommendations.
Here are some things you should know:
I am a text-a-holic
the only email i ever receive is spam and facebook updates
i am NOT technologically savy
I don't like flip phones
and i am swayed very easily by pretty shinny things so the prettiness of the phone will be a large deciding factor.

Please help (ryan this is directed mainly at you....i know you got the knowledge to help me out with this one)

If you plan on extending your contract you may as well get a new phone. I'd stay away from Blackberries though, there's a lot of radiation that comes form those things, and it doesn't sound like you need to check your email with it if all you get is spam. Don't be upsold!

If you are unhappy with your phone then it makes sense to upgrade. If you are happy with your phone, and it charges fine now, then stick with your phone.

Lindsay is right that you can get a hardware upgrade every year with Rogers. You will pay up to $150 more than the 3 year contract price for a phone if you upgrade, but often you will pay about the same as the 3 year contract price (for new contracts). Sometimes even less. It depends on your spend since your last upgrade (ie, how much money you've given Rogers).

Another beautiful option you have with Rogers is to cancel your service. But just don't actually cancel your service. If you are dissatisfied with your phone and/or plan you can call to cancel. When you want to cancel you will be transferred to the Retention department and they will try to keep your business. This even works when you are still on a contract.

With Retention, you tell them what you're unhappy with ("my phone is dying", "my plan is too expensive", or "I don't feel that I'm getting my money's worth"). If you're going for a new phone, have an idea of what phone you want. If you're going for a change in plan, have an idea of how many daytime minutes you want, included text messages, included long distance minutes, included extras (call ID, voicemail, etc).

You have maximum power to negotiate when your contract expires. It is better to negotiate a cheaper plan than a cheap phone, because the plan will save you over time but the phone is just a one-time savings. But, again, you should have an idea of what you want.

I only go to a Rogers dealer if I know exactly what I want. Otherwise, look at the Rogers website and talk to them on the phone. Yes, they will push Blackberries in store because they make commission on your contract renewal, and on the data plan that they will get you to sign up for. It's much easier to avoid the pressure of the phone sales person than the in-store sales person. (You can hang up a lot easier than you can walk away.)

As Mark said, it doesn't sound like you want to get your e-mail to your phone. A full keyboard might make texting nicer to you, but it adds to the size of the phone. Most girls I know prefer a smaller phone to a full keyboard.

Ultimately my two cents are: don't get a new phone if you're happy with your current phone; when you do want a new phone try to have a very good idea of which one you want; and try to deal with Rogers on the phone if you're not comfortable speaking on the same level as the in-store sales people.

New phone? Well you know where i stand in this conversation, as for radiation, there is no more radiation coming out of a blackberry then what comes out of the phone you have..lol..After all your google add says "there is a blackberry out there for everyone" so i think i told you what i think..lol...you are a text machine, and how much do you pay for that a month? with a blackberry you can PIN message anyone for free that has a blackberry and they offer blackberry messanger, MSN messanger.. what is better then a full keyboard? when dialing a phone number that is a word ex:1800-eat-shit the blackberry will associate the numbers to the word you just wrote. It has a password keeper to store all of your passwords, and it locks itself when you put it in its case and you can set it to ring different when it is in its case vs when it is out of it. It is also a canadian invention. A blackberry can act as a USB jump drive once mass storage is enabled and you can use it for MP3 and photos for storeing and sending..A blackberry has the best reception then any other phone:)Remember that the blackberry still offers all the same as a regular phone ex: alarm clock, calculator, etc... and it has FREE games :)
